Alzheimer’s Researcher and Geoffrey Beene Foundation Exec Honored with the 2007 Senator Proxmire Award

Dale B. Schenk, Ph.D, Executive Vice President and Chief Scientific Officer for Elan Pharmaceuticals, Inc., a celebrated scientist who has made fundamental breakthroughs in basic and clinical Alzheimer’s research over the past twenty years, and Meryl Comer, President of the Geoffrey Beene Gives Back® Alzheimer’s Initiative and Emmy-award winning broadcast journalist will be honored as the 2007 Senator William Proxmire Awardees on Thursday, December 6 in the LBJ Room of the United States Capitol. This awards dinner will be hosted by The Copper Ridge Institute and chaired by Mrs. William Proxmire.

The award honors the late Senator William Proxmire who battled Alzheimer’s disease and was cared for at Copper Ridge. The award is given to individuals who have exhibited extraordinary leadership roles in the fight against Alzheimer’s disease.

Former distinguished honorees include: 2003 – Congressman David Obey and Senator Arlen Specter, 2004 – Congressman Roscoe Bartlett, Congressman Edward Markey, Senator Jeff Sessions and Senator Barbara Mikulski, 2005 – Senator Paul Sarbanes and 2006 –Constantine Lyketsos, MD , Director of Psychiatry at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center and Mrs. Melanie Sabelhaus, former Deputy Administrator of the U.S. Small Business Administration and noted philanthropist.
